Kansas City All Beef Hot Dogs
4 Must-Try Hot Dogs in Kansas City
Labor Day weekend marks the official end of summer for many seasonal businesses. The pools will close, and diners will begin to turn their appetites away from simple summertime treats to more serious fall eats.
This weekend, there's no better way to say goodbye to summer than by getting your hands on one of America's favorite summertime staples: the hot dog.
Here are four great places to find an excellent hot dog this weekend.

Detroit Coney Dog from Coney Island
The classic Coney Island chili cheese dog is not something hugely familiar to most people in Kansas City. But Ronnie McGowan opened upConey Island in Lenexa to rave reviews last year, educating folks about the history of the humble Coney dog and the sweetly spicy chili that goes on top. To make a meal, you'll want to order several of his traditionally tiny Coney Island chili cheese dogs, which each cost less than $2, or branch out and sample the delicious Chicago dog. Better yet, get the Detroit dog that features an all-natural casing dog on a steamed bun with chili, mustard and raw onions. This is the true taste of summer, in a bun. Breakfast Dog from Up Dog
In 2011, the McClain family opened Up Dog on Independence Square as a place to bring the entire family together for the love of a good hot dog. With plenty of regional favorites on the menu –like the Chicago (drug through the garden) and New York (mustard and sauerkraut) dog –it's really the more unusual, yet crave-able, hot dogs that make this a destination. Try the Breakfast Dog, which features a fluffy white bun with a Klement all-beef Chicago-style dog topped with bacon, egg and Cheddar cheese. Don't forget to order a side of tater tots. This weekend is Santi-Cali-Gon Days in Independence, so plan to make a day of it, as Up Dog will be open all weekend. (Photo courtesy of Up Dog)

Pretzel Dog at Boulevard Brewing Co.
The new Tours & Recreation Center at Boulevard Brewing Co. is open, and the second floor houses the brewery's brand-new 10,000-square-foot Beer Hall. Featuring 24 beers on tap, delicious food and an expansive deck with great city views the Beer Hall is open 11am to 7pm, seven days a week. The new kitchen serves beer-friendly food like the signature pretzel dogs which feature a chicken andouille sausage wrapped in pretzel dough and baked golden brown, served with a side of beer cheese. Slaw Dog from the NKC Hot Dog Cart
Fri., Aug. 26, was the last day Michelle Barnett operated the storefront for her year-old NKC Dog. Now, she simply dishes her dogs from a mobile cart and has taken the show on the road. Most days, you can find her parked at 1800 Burlington in North Kansas City, selling classic all-beef hot dogs from Scimeca's served on Roma Bakery buns topped with onion, mustard, ketchup and relish for $5. Specialty dogs are just $6, and include her Slaw Dog with a Scimeca's all-beef hot dog, coleslaw, mustard and a pickle spear. Check the NKC Dog Facebook page for updates before heading out. Email Michelle Barnett at mbarnett@nkcdog.com to schedule a catering or to request the cart to come and park at a location near you.
